Open and closed boxing stances suit different goals.
People get into boxing for different reasons. Some want a good workout. Others want to work off aggression. Still others are in it for a shot at the title. Whatever your reasons for getting into the Sweet Science, building your ring skills starts with understanding the basic stances.
Closed Stance Basics
A closed boxing stance puts the line of your body nearly perpendicular to the other fighter, with the front foot at a 45 degree angle and your rear foot pointing naturally with the rest of your body with your face forward and gloves up.
The closed stance presents the smallest possible target profile, meaning fewer punches are likely to land on your body. The foot position also makes you more mobile in a backward-forward line. This comes at the cost of putting your rear shoulder far behind the front shoulder, making it harder to land a powerful rear-hand punch.
Open Stance Basics
In an open stance, a boxer squares up more to his opponent, placing his body at about 45 degrees to the other fighter. The feet are spaced wider with the front toe toward the opponent and the rear foot at 45 degrees. Hand and head position remain the same as in closed stance.
Open Stance Considerations
An open stance presents a larger target profile and makes you slower in moving backward to slip a punch. It does allow better lateral movement and places the rear shoulder closer to the opponent for better delivery of power punches.
Choosing Your Stance
Neither stance is objectively better or worse than the other, but both are superior for specific fighting styles. In general, aggressive fighters do better with an open stance, while defensive fighters and counterpunchers favor the closed stance. In an actual self defense situation, a closed stance is the better choice as it focuses on not getting injured rather than dishing out damage to the other fighter.
